The Book of John Gray

OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network) debuted a new dramedy docu-series, “The Book of John Gray,” which airs on Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The show stars The Rt. Rev. John Gray, associate pastor of Joel Osteen’s world-famous Lakewood mega church in Houston, Texas.

Rev. Gray is quite known for his entertaining style of delivering the gospel via vocal volume and comical physical animation. Gray has traveled the world teaching his Christian philosophy. The series takes the viewer into the personal and home life of associate Pastor Gray for a firsthand look of the challenges he faces daily being an associate Pastor of the largest mega-church in the nation as well as his wife, children, home responsibilities and those he helps and works with in the community.

When asked about what the viewers can expect about his marriage and home life, Pastor Gray responds; “We’re very normal people who believe in a very supernatural God. And if there are lessons that you can learn and glean from that then great. But I think people connect to brokenness, humanity and process more than perfection and this sense of I’ve arrived, let me help you get to where I am. Nobody does that. Nobody wants to be told how amazing someone else is and how amazing they are not. The thing that make us (him and his wife) palatable and approachable is that we share our flaws and that’s the way we intend to live our lives.”

Pastor Gray gets right to the point when he preaches and some may take it as being hard but he explains, “The key to be able to hit hard is to also immediately validate the other individual. When you don’t disrespect where people’s starting point is they’ll listen to you. My job is not to point fingers, it’s to lift hands. We use a lot of laughter and comedy because it unveils, it disarms and once the comedy hits, then people can receive the loving instruction. And I mean those two together. It’s not instruction, it’s ‘love’ and ‘instruction,’ I fight for people. My wife fights for people. That’s our calling. That’s what we want to do.”

Pastor Gray adds that, “We don’t have all of the answers and sometimes it hits hard. Truth is not designed to be without effect. Sometimes truth has pain but it is a necessary pain so that you can heal.”

The series is produced by Leftfield Pictures.  Executive producers are David George, Jordana Hochman and Joe Weinstock from Leftfield Pictures, with Rich Wilkerson and Jason Kennedy serving as consulting producers.
