Keanu Reeves Returns In
John Wick Chapter 2

In 2014, John Wick exploded on the scene as a retired super hit man who went on a killing rampage after criminals killed his dog. The movie was a world-wide box office Smash hit and the character played by Keanu Reeves became a major superstar. With these kinds of makings on their hands, what else is a movie studio to do but make a sequel? Thus, we have “John Wick Chapter 2.”

In the second instalment, Mr. Wick, who is trying to maintain a low key, unsuspecting retirement, receives a visit from an Italian gangster messenger sent by Winston (played by Ian McShane), who is the kingpin of a secret assassin society “The Continental.”

Unfortunately, Wick has a sworn blood oath to The Continental and must return to Italy for work. His assignment is to take out Winston’s own sister Gianna (Claudia Gerini) the ruthless capo who he intends to replace as the top commander of the Italian Camorra crime syndicate.

Cassian (Common) No joke killer
Wick must overcome his chief nemeses i.e., Gianna’s personal bodyguard, trained killer Cassian (Common) and Ares (Ruby Rose) also no joke as a killer. In between those two, Wick kills at least 50 or more nobody’s who are either chasing him for the mob or in his way. Wick returns to New York with a worldwide bounty on his head so he seeks the help of the mysterious Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne).

Fishburne and Reeves on red carpet for the premiere
This film marks an on-screen reunion of Fishburne and Reeves from “The Matrix” franchise. Fishburne credits Reeves with putting in a good word for him to director Chad Staheiski for his role. Staheiski adds that he and the producers had Fishburne in mind for the part even with the writing of the script. There were some daring stunts in this film. Sometimes studios won’t OK stunts that they feel are too risky or dangerous. How did the producers and director navigate this situation? Producer Basil Iwanyk joked and said, “It’s what we tell the studio we’re doing and what we actually do. If the studio knew some of the things that Chad made the actors do, maybe we would not have had approval but we did it anyway. The cast was very well trained.”

What are some of the things that immediately come to mind when the studio orders a sequel? Director Staheiski responds saying, “When we were asked to do a sequel, we were very flattered and hopeful. It’s always a challenge to do something original and build on something you’ve already built. I think when Keanu, myself, Basil and Derek all got together we said if we’re going to do a sequel, how do we do this? I think what everyone felt as with the first one, all of the building we had done, the kind of underworld assins, The Continental mythology and the world we had built. So, we really wanted to expand on that and show a little bit more insight into that world and what John Wick did in that world and all of the colorful characters we could put into that world. I think that’s where we started from.”
