Calgary quartet, RALEIGH,
has premiered a new single, “Smoke In Our Eyes” today via GoldFlakePaint –
share via Soundcloud. The track, which features Brendan Canning of
Broken Social Scene on guitar and Charlotte Cornfield on backup vocals,
will be featured on the band’s new album, Powerhouse Bloom,
set to arrive September 29, with a run of Canadian dates that began on Thursday, September 7 in Edmonton (full dates below).
Of the single, RALEIGH stated, “we used to live in this 100 year old house on a hill in Calgary, with our a cat named Casper. All cats are good at sleeping, but this guy seemed like a feline psychonaut. He would always hang where the people were, even if that was the smoky living room, where he’d perch up somewhere and listen to records with his eyes closed. We would imagine he was picturing an epic cat adventure, astrally travelling through back alleys and off into the night. This song is based on a fascination with the power of our transportive, imaginative minds, but is also just a jam we know Casper would dig."
Unafraid of both straight-up hooks and experimental song structure, RALEIGH is carving their own space in new music. A mutual love of the evolving intricacies that music exhibits has propelled RALEIGH throughout the years, and has inspired a constant renewal of collaborative creation. The band can spend hours experimenting with sound, hanging in the home studio setup with Champ and Rudy, the resident poodles. There are many reasons to delve into the world of music, but the truth about RALEIGH is that it is the brain, the heart, and the lovechild of musicians who would rather not compromise unless it’s for each other.

Powerhouse Bloom was initially
conceived during the famed Independent Band Residency at the Banff Centre
for Arts and Creativity, workshopped with producers Canning, Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin of
Broken Social Scene, along with a different engineer, Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes/Weezer), Graham
Lessard (Timber Timbre/Plants and Animals) and Nyles Spencer (Tragically
Hip/Broken Social Scene), each day. The material was then brought to the
Bathouse Studio in Bath, Ontario, where RALEIGH rejoined with Spencer for
additional recording and mix sessions. It shows a band that has found
their voice, deconstructed it, and is continuing to evolve. Unafraid of both straight-up hooks and experimental song structure, RALEIGH is carving their own space in new music. A mutual love of the evolving intricacies that music exhibits has propelled RALEIGH throughout the years, and has inspired a constant renewal of collaborative creation.
