DIY OUTFIT PLAYS HONEST ALT-AMERICANA TACKLING
DEPRESSION, SUICIDE, LOVE & LOSS
Hodera plays honest alt-Americana with difficult subjects such as depression, suicide, loss and love. The Jersey DIY quartet will release First Things First on October 20 via Take This To Heart Records and today share first single, “North Dakota”. The album is currently available for pre-order in three vinyl colors, grey/olive green, clear with olive green, sea blue and bone splatter and black. Pre-order First Things First HERE.
"North Dakota" is a metaphor; a dream world where life is perfect and all obstacles no longer exist or matter. It describes wanting to be with someone despite living States away and leading very different lives. Hear “North Dakota” courtesy of Gold Flake Paint, who say, "Allow Hodera to throw you deep inside grey, stormy days, and aching solemnity with a new track that is an immediate and utterly captivating introduction to their brand new album."

Delivering memorable sets at The Fest to headlining the Studio at Webster Hall during Champagne Jam, Hodera has found themselves receiving praise from The Front Bottoms, Julien Baker, Pinegrove, Phoebe Bridgers and Spotify viral charts for their honest and poetic songs. They'll be hitting the road this fall to support the album but start with local shows in September with Microwave on the 8 at TCNJ and Dryjacket at Voltage Lounge in Philly on the 27th. A full list of tour dates can be found below with more to be added.
Hodera is spearheaded by Matthew Smith, who persisted in forming a unique sound amidst the vast depths of successful New Jersey acts. Mixed by James Paul Wisner (Paramore, Underoath, Dashboard Confessional) and mastered by Mike Kalajian (Saosin, The Dear Hunter, Moving Mountains), First Things First is an explorative work, candid with its emotions, unraveling a soundscape that provides listeners with an album full of memory and warmth.
“I like to keep the storyline in each song raw, so it’s not just a general pop song, or anyone else’s memory. It’s my story that I’m telling and letting people connect with,” says Smith.
Being transparent is more than an act for Hodera, it’s embedded into the very soul of the music, and that’s what makes their music feel personal. Through First Things First’s dynamic ten tracks, we are brought on a journey with Hodera, as Matthew poetically narrates each story.
We join them in the confusion and frustration of growing up and trying to find where we belong; the grief of losing friends, family and potential loves; the dark corners depression can lead to, and the measures someone will go to just for a glimpse at happiness’ light again. Ultimately though, it leads us to the realization that no one is alone in the human experience and we can all strive to get better.
